The Yellow Serpent (2011)

My collage The Yellow Serpent is part of my ongoing series of collages “I am a hippie without a rainbow”. The title is a reflection about myself as a political individual, as an idealistic artist who is struggling with the disenchanted reality of today's world.

The Yellow Serpent is based on an universal myth of the australian Aboriginals. They say once the yellow serpent awakes, it is a sign of the end of the world. In the context of the uranium deposit of Australia, which literally looks like a snake from above, running through the north of the country, this tale has a resonance to the event of a meltdown of the core reactors in the nuclear power stations in Fukushima 2011 due to a tsunami in the Pacific Ocean. The Mayan myth - which is very popular these days because of their apocalyptic prediction - knows the serpent Quexicolotl as the god of destruction as being an omnipresent force in the year 2012.

The collage is shown at the 15th anniversary exhibition "Exi[s]t" at Bulart Gallery in Varna, Bulgaria, curated by Dora Doncheva.

Schlaflied is a German lullaby sung to children at bed time.

Projecting a diapositive on the backyard walls of Wedding, the most war ravaged area of Berlin in World War II, the slide shows a cemetery of soldiers in France. Halter through this performative action explores a futility. A futility in the loss of life. The futilities of war.

“A Wake: Still Lives and Moving Images”

Death, and its accompanying rituals, are celebrated and explored in Momentum's upcoming exhibition “A Wake: Still Lives and Moving Images.” As a platform dedicated to interrogating time-based art, “A Wake,” examines what happens when time runs out, through the veil, and into the hereafter.

It is an emergence into consciousness, as well as a consequence or a result. Taking this transitional point between being and representation, “A Wake” incorporates video, digital media, photography and film to create a space where media itself becomes the veil through which we pass--the translucent surface between observer and observed.

Curators Rachel Rits-Volloch, Leo Kuelbs and Adam Nankervis have selected works woven with the contemporary and contemporaneous dialogues of international artists. The works are presented as a processional of screens throughout the gallery--Momentum Berlin.

All cultures acknowledge the Day of the Dead. Some celebrate, others mourn, but the ineluctable culmination of life is a part of every belief system and of every personal journey. Opening the weekend of All Saints Day, Los Dios des Muetrtes (The Day of the Dead), A Wake will be held in a once-upon-a-time infirmary within the former cloisters of Bethanien House Berlin.

Originally built as a hospital--a space both battling and housing death--Bethanien has since been transformed into a place where the processes of art and creation manifest the victory of life over death. We fill this space with a labyrinth of screens, illuminating still lives and moving images. A Wake is a passage through time, a processional, which is our "offerenda,” an offering to visiting souls awakened on this day, every year.

Harz Trilogie

The Harz-Trilogie is based on a visit at my parents in april 2011 together with Adam Nankervis. My father invited us for a hike in the Harz Mountains, where we visited the former border and walked along the death strip of the GDR.
Afterwards we visited one of the beautiful dripstone caves, called Baumann Höhle.
The whole trip brought up a lot of memories from my childhood.
The Broken (the highest mountain within Harz Mountains) who was situated in the GDR and - not just because of the Sowjet communication intercept station on its top - out of reach.
The river Oker, where I slipped on of the gigantic marble like stones and got a brain concussion when I was a child.

For my work "Genug ist nicht genug" (enough is not enough) I have choosen the so titled album of the german singer-songwriter Konstantin Wecker.
By cutting out the singers image I am questioning the individuality of the Berlin "fun generation" and their greed for more. The modern hipster who likes the old fashioned Berlin as a wallpaper for partying.

This collage is my comment to the imprisonment of Ai Wei Wei. I cut out eight seeds (eight is for eternity), symbolic for all the disappeared artists from past to present.

The work is shown as part of a mail art exhibition organized and curated by Shalva Kobaladze at "new art café", Tbilisi (Georgia) from 18th till 25th of june 2011.

About the exhibition:

Artists have been and are invited to contribute a vision of the zeitgeist. Visions of the microcosmic, macrocosmic, mutatations, implosions, growth. The singular wandering through a cacophony of buffers and/or a constellation of illumination inspired by the poet Stephan Mallarme's Un Coup de Des.

The black ink formation of words on a page, the markings denoting form and meaning, spell a cosmology of strokes, crosses, dashes, dots, and outline blocks, an architectual glimpse at a landscape of a meaning of content and context. Ernst Fraenkel, the 19th century philologist who made a study of Mallarme and his symbolist poetry, observed of the poem Un Coup de Des, (a poem which may have inspired Burroughs and Gyson in their experiment of cut and paste in its pull and pool of word play). A broken text of a ship steering forward into the abyss. Fraenkel said of this poem, that the page to observe in typographical print, appeared to be "black stars on a white sky".

"The World Stamp" was the first milimeter cutting I did in 2009 and showed first at A Spires Ember in Kiev and in 2010 at But what about the crumpling paper... in Berlin.


Schnitt / Beuys (2011)

Based on a Polaroid Andy Warhol made of Jospeh Beuys, I cutted the portrait of Beuys using a scalpel and a DIN A3 milimeter paper sheet. The cutted paper i fit in between two glas plates and created a wooden box with a copper plate as background.

Troyart is a nonprofit and collaborative project.
Fivehundred artists from all over the world were asked to transform a paper-robot-kit.
After the works are exhibited, the individual works will become part of the permanent collection of Museo Brasileiro da Escultura in São Paulo (Brasil).

The collague was shown for the first time at Black Stars On A White Sky - a book; part of the Museum Man show in 2009 at Chateau de Sacy, Sacy-le Petit, France.

How the original disappeared and a print became the reborn original

Before I sent the artwork to LuAnn Palazzo, I scanned my artwork for the ABAD blog aswell as to put it on my blog.
It was really not that easy, because of the shiny surface of the sticker I used for the work, but that's not important for the story.
At the post office I decided to send my work as a registered letter, so it would be traceable and insured...
A few weeks later, I was already involved in some other projects, I got a reminder from LuAnn to send my physical artwork. Needless to say, I was a little bit irritated.
Of course, me and LuAnn immediately started the research by asking the postal services - she in New York and me in Berlin - where the registered letter was.
The german postal service told me it was in New York, while the New York postal service couldn't find it and said I should start a search request. The result of the search request was: the letter is in New York, but the New York postal service should now the exact place. The New York postal service again said, because of the different system, I should start a search request at the german postal service...
To cut a long story short: I printed the scanned image and send it as normal (untracable and uninsured) letter which arrived within 4 days without any complication in New York.

Literally translated Kunstgekröse means "art mesentery". The function of the mesentery is to connect inner organs to our body.

In the time between autumn 2008 and summer 2010 I used this old metal bucket as trash bin for used and broken materials I've used in my artworks, aswell as messed up artworks and some packages of consumed tobacco, bottle stoppers, corks...

I kept it all as a reminder of former failures and the development of my arts.

One Month Work (ongoing work)

One of my recent projects: "One Month Work" (working title).

The idea behind this project is to visually compare a "9 to 5" job with my artistic work flow. Therefore I decided to start this time consuming, tedious project.
Counting the hours it will be almost exactly one month work - thinking of 8 hours a day, 40 hours a weeks, 120 hours a month.
The plastered easel will be presented on another upcoming installation piece I will show in this posting.

"The quality management" - I sort out the punched dots and divide the blank ones from the printed or the damaged, only pure blank dots are used for the artwork.

In my ongoing project “Solid Opinions” the crutch as an instrument to support and help wounded or disabled people, is used as a symbol for fixed ideas. Almost immovable, the original intention of the instrument becomes overturned to the point of absurdity that on the one hand critiques our reliance on mental positions, at the same time suggesting the darker social impact of these belief-systems in the history of mankind.

The idea for my sculpture was to create an artwork with the very fertile, black ukrainian earth. The motive was inspired by Nicolai Gogols novel "The Nose".

At first I build the sculpture as a circle with a walking nose in the middle. The second step was to remove the whole sculpture and rebuild it; because the earth was very humid - a picture of the absence was left.
Then an unknown person destroyed the nose and made a "hammer and sickle" instead.
Before I could rebuild the nose again, the symbol changed again to "anarchy".
In the end I started a perfomative last rebuilding of the nose, but changed it from circle to triangle and from a lateral to a topview.

EIDOS ARTS DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION and MUSEUM MAN

A SPIRES EMBERS is an exhibition exploring the notion of fracture and fractured states within the newly ruptured, raptured, broken and building of states in and of the current global zeitgeist. Here we explore Orpheus' turning gaze. What we find are testimonies to past present past futures.
An exploration of spiritual, political, financial terrirotorial shifts, dislocation, anhebriahation of the new, the despair of the lost, the seduction of the found.
Artists are invited in the construct of a spire, an aspiration to flood the temple's steeple within a dialogue of saturation to be housed in the Arsenale Kiev.
The "steeple" will be an autonomous structure built within one of two chambers 2x1500sq metres of the Mystetskyi Arsenal Kiev.
Like an albatros nest, the marathon of trawling of flotsam jetsam, installed in a tower of spatial conduction which will be wrought with the findings and works of artists, both nationally in the Ukraine and internationally.

Artists are invited to do interventions within the superstructure and outside within the vaulted states of the Arsenale.

This paradigm will be multi discplinary, painting, sculpture, video, sound installation, performative action, time based work, bringing together a ruptured choir of different dialogues.
Works will be borrowed from international collections including EIDOS FOUNDATION LUDMILA BEREZNITSKA COLLECTION + Museum MAN within the space that is the Arsenale for the GOGOLFEST KIEV 2009.

Reliquaries of Empires Dust

Reliquaries of Empires Dust is a response to an accelerating age of information with palpable cause and effect, wherein lies an increasing speedway of news and heightened coverage of issues of crippling magnitude, wherein lay the collapse of global circuits, from wars, monetary, social and environmental mono-systems, multi-systems, ecosystems and the redefining of lines of geopolitics. All intrinsically linked, this has become a viral down turn-on the brink of collapse and reinvention. A penultimate new order coalescing like a clot during this, the system of a down, and a time of macro introspection and the need for reinvention of archaen networks now failed.The blurprint of the circus is over. The phoenix is stirring.

The project pigsartpigs was created between 2007 and 2009 as a reflection about the artscene, respectively the art market. The titel is a coinage consisting of pigsart and artpigs.

With „pigsart“ I refer to Outsider-Art and Trash-Art; exaggerated by the choice of the pig as main motif.

Unter dem Eindruck des 11. Septembers 2001 und der darauffolgenden Debatte um einen Einmarsch US-amerikanischer Truppen in den Irak (der dann 2003 tatsächlich stattfand), habe ich mich intensiv mit dem Thema des „modernen Kriegs“ und der Rolle des einzelnen Soldaten auseinandergesetzt.

2002 entstand daraus meine Arbeitsreihe „Krieg ist Apokalypse für den Einzelnen“.

Under the impression of 9-11 and the following debate about the invasion of the US-army into Iraq (what actually happened in 2003), I grappled with the topic of the „modern war“ and the situation of the individual soldier.

In 2002 my work series „War is apocalypse for the individual“ resulted.
